Mali Unrest

Unrest continues in Mali

Unrest continued in Mali today as protesters surrounded the residence of Mali's president in response over the governments response to attacks by Tuareg rebels in the north of the country. The rebels are demanding the creation of an autonomous Azawad region in the northern desert. Fighting broke out in January triggered by the return of fighters from Libya where they had been fighting with Col Gaddafi's forces. Old ethnic tensions, between the north and the south, that have remained calm for over two years have resumed. The Tuareg have complained for years that they have been marginalised by the southern government, several rebellions have been staged over the years.
